Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) / cold Laser used in small animal clinic
Case Study 1:
A seven-year-old male Irish setter presented with a history of left front leg lameness of one-year duration. A radiographic diagnosis of osteoarthritis of the left carpus and interphalangeal joints of the first and second digit was made. The condition initially responded to polyglycosated aminoglycans (Adequan) and NSAIDs. During the past few months the lameness had become non responsive to the current medications and the patient’s demeanor had become lackadaisical. Surgery consult offered carpal fusion as treatment but the owner felt it too aggressive at that stage. Laser therapy was initiated using both LED cluster as well as Laser probe. Within three treatments the patient’s demeanor had improved considerably. He had become more active and engaged. After the fourth treatment the lameness appeared to be improving and subsequently disappeared after the seventh session. Currently he remains pain free and active with Laser therapy every second or third week.
Case Study 2:
A twenty year old domestic short hair neutered male cat with hind end stiffness of several years duration. He had previously been diagnosed radiographically with osteoarthritis of both stifle joints as well as spondylosis of the lumbar spine. Occasional use of aspirin and NSAIDs had resulted in some improvement in mobility but the patient could no longer climb stairs or jump onto furniture. The owner felt that his quality of life was acceptable but was hoping for a means to improve comfort. Laser therapy was initiated with LED cluster over the stifles, lumbar spine and sacrum. The owner reported improved alertness after the initial session with improved mobility noted after the second treatment. After five Laser therapies the pet now climbs stairs, has become considerably more active and jumps onto low pieces of furniture. Tail activity has returned and the patient is well controlled with every third week sessions.
